If You’re Considering a Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck is a common plastic surgery that addresses the abdominal area, tightening the skin and repairing the stretched muscles. It is commonly performed for women who have experienced childbirth or individuals who have achieved weight loss. Last year, more than 100,000 people had tummy tuck surgery in the U.S. alone (according to ASPS). The full tummy tuck is certainly an effective procedure for slimming down the midsection, but some patients could still benefit from additional sculpting; that’s when the UltraTuck provides superior results.
Candidates for a Tummy Tuck include patients who exhibit:
- Protruding abdomen
- Loose skin on tummy
- Stretched abdominal muscles
The best candidates for a tummy tuck will be healthy, non-smokers who are not planning to become pregnant or gain weight (for lasting results). A tummy tuck or UltraTuck is not suitable for obese patients.
What to Expect During Abdominoplasty
Each tummy tuck procedure varies, as there are different techniques that Dr. Gill may use (including the Ultra Tuck technique). The surgery requires an incision across the lower abdomen, with extra care to plan the scar for easy concealment. General anesthesia is used, and sometimes combined with muscle relaxation. After the incision, the skin is lifted and the abdominal muscles are repaired with sutures. The loose skin is then trimmed and the navel remodeled before the incisions are closed with layers of dissolvable sutures.
If you are undergoing the UltraTuck procedure, Dr. Gill will also perform ultrasound-assisted liposuction in the surrounding areas. UAL is an advanced liposuction method that applies ultrasound waves to break up fat prior to removal, for an ultra-precise fat reduction. The flanks, back, hips and thighs – the entire core and trunk – is treated.
Optimal results from the UltraTuck produce tighter firmer skin on the tummy, a flatter abdomen, slimmer midsection and a sculpted silhouette.
Recovering from a Tummy Tuck
After your tummy tuck in Houston, Dr. Gill will apply a gauze dressing and a loose elastic compression garment. You will be given specific instructions for aftercare pertaining to your incisions, drains, medications and garments. The doctor will monitor your progress during follow-up appointments. Tummy tuck surgery is a rather extensive procedure, so expect a total recovery of at least 2 to 3 weeks. Possible complications include but are not limited to haematoma, seroma, scarring, infection and bleeding. Ask Dr. Gill for more details if you are especially concerned about risks involved with plastic surgery.
What is a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is a procedure designed to treat loose skin, soft tissue, and lax muscle of the abdomen. It is typically performed in patients who have undergone pregnancies, lost weight, or have undergone the effects of aging.
How long does a tummy tuck take to perform?
A tummy tuck procedure takes anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on the amount of loose skin, soft tissue, and muscle repair required.
How do you perform a tummy tuck?
Our tummy tuck is designed to conceal the incision within the bikini or underwear line. We will typically ask our patients to wear underwear or a bikini that they would like us to hide the incision within. This is of paramount importance. In addition, we frequently utilize liposuction of the flanks and upper abdomen to help further contour and shape the abdomen. Finally, we perform an extensive muscle placation utilizing two separate repairs to provide optimal contour and shape, not only from the profile but side views.
Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
Our most common candidates for tummy tuck are women who have undergone pregnancies and who have completed their childbearing age. They desired a return of their abdominal wall to pre-pregnancy status; in addition we perform a lot of body contouring surgery after massive weight loss. This can be from either medical or surgical weight loss such as a gastric bypass or a Lap-Band. These are excellent candidates because with weight loss surgery or medical weight loss loose skin and loose muscle is of primary concern and responds very well to abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery.
What are realistic expectations for a patient a having tummy tuck?
It is important to discuss realistic expectations during the initial consultation. This is a significant portion of our initial consult evaluation is to hear and discuss a patients concerns, desires, and end goals and compare this to what their anatomy and their body habitus will allow. In the event that the body habitus will not allow for patient expectations to be met, it is important that we discuss this up front in a realistic and educational fashion. This is of utmost importance as surgery is not always suitable for everybody and it is the job of the plastic surgeon to discuss this in detail, to pre-screen, and to discuss what is realistic and what is not. Realistic expectations of a tummy tuck are a low midline scar, a very well conformed belly button, and a flat abdomen. This procedure is only designed to treat the abdomen and the flanks, not the lower back, not the hips. These are additional problem areas that do not receive treatment with a standard tummy tuck but can be addressed in combination with a tummy tuck procedure.
What are common reasons why a patient wants a tummy tuck procedure?
Common reasons why a patient wants a tummy tuck procedure are loss of weight after medical or surgical procedures or post pregnancy, loose skin and muscle, or to improve the signs of aging.
How long does it take for a patient to recover from a tummy tuck?
Recovery is a very subjective process but we find, based on experience that approximately 90 percent of our patients are off pain medication and able to return to basic activities by 2 weeks. We do maintain a patient in an abdominal garment and binder for 6 weeks. During the first 6 weeks we eliminate the amount of lifting to less than 20 pounds and we’ll also limit any core strengthening exercises to allow for appropriate healing of the abdominal musculature. Typical recovery is 2 weeks of time off work or from basic activities. We find most patients are able to drive and return to basic desk work by 2 weeks, however, by 6 weeks a patient should be 100 percent and be able to return to normal exercise and core strengthening activities without restriction.
Are there any other additional procedures?
We typically perform an ultra tuck. An ultra tuck refers to the utilization of ultrasonic liposuction and combination tummy tuck. This is a procedure that I’ve described in the treatment of patients with large truncal laxity and soft tissue and involves extensive liposuction of, not only the flanks, but also the lower and upper back as well as hip and thigh area. By rejuvenating this area as a unit from upper back down to mid-thigh it allows for supreme contouring and reshaping in combination with the tummy tuck. We find utilization of ultrasonic liposuction treats the upper, lower back and flanks very well due to the thicker dermal structures and allowing for a tightening of this skin more effectively than traditional liposuction.
