Injectable Fillers

Individuals who are fed up with wrinkles, fine lines and other unattractive signs of aging that develop in the forehead, eyes, or the corners of the mouth, may find relief in treatment with injectable fillers such as Juvederm or Radiesse.

Radiesse is a long-lasting injectable that is used for the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds. The product is made of a substance called calcium hydroxylapatite or CaHA, a gel that contains small calcium microspheres.

The nasolabial fold travels from each side of the nose to the mouth corners.

A filler like Juvederm or Radiesse can fill in the line to create a smoother appearance.

Juvederm, another popular wrinkle filler, is a biodegradable product made of hyaluronic acid, a material found in the skin, muscles, and tendons in the body. The liquid form of hyaluronic acid is cross-linked so that the individual chains of the acid bind together, transforming the substance into a gel.

If You're Considering Injectable Filler Treatment in Houston

Both products are FDA approved for cosmetic uses. With Juvederm, the most common use is treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. This might include indications such as:

  • Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
  • Marionette lines
  • Lipstick lines

Off-label uses for Juvederm may include lip augmentation and facial contouring.

Similarly, Radiesse is FDA-approved for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, but its approval encompasses facial augmentation and contouring as well. Off-label use includes marionette lines, nasal contouring and augmentation, and correction of depressed scars.

What to Expect in Treatment

First the skin surface is cleansed, and a topical anesthetic is administered for comfort. Your surgeon will carefully select the injection sites, administer the filler, and then massage the area to ensure a smooth result. Both Juvederm and Radiesse are injected into the subdermal plane of your skin using a linear threading, cross-hatching, or fanning technique.

Radiesse encourages the production of new collagen in the body, a side effect that means that less product is needed in future treatments. In a similar manner, the HA particles in Juvederm act as a platform for collagen deposition, and are slowly metabolized, requiring repeat treatments and gradually less product.

Recovering from Juvederm and Radiesse Treatment

Refrain from strenuous exercise, alcohol consumption, and sun exposure for the first 24 hours after treatment. Otherwise, little care is needed after treatment with Juvederm or Radiesse. If you experience swelling it may help to apply ice to the area.

Side effects to look for include the following: redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, edema, tenderness, and discoloration. If you develop any suspicious side effects, or any of your symptoms worsen, please contact a health care professional.
