Calf implants are designed to help men or women surgically enhance the contour of their lower legs, either for elective purposes or medical conditions or injuries that affect the calves. With implants on the inner or outer calf,t this procedure can enhance the shape of the calf or correct an abnormally small lower leg.
In Houston, plastic surgeon Paul Gill MD provides calf augmentation using silicone implants that enhance leg contour and overall body proportion.
Those who choose calf implant surgery typically struggle with a calf that is disproportionate to their thigh, or is naturally thin, and does not respond to weight training or exercise Some patients are bodybuilders who want more contour in their calves, while others have suffered an injury or disease that causes leg shrinkage or loss of muscle mass.
Before your calf augmentation surgery, Dr. Gill may help you visualize the expected outcome by placing the calf implants inside knee-high stockings. On the day of surgery, your leg is shaved and the doctor applies an antibacterial solution. With a local or general anesthetic, the calf implant surgery is then performed. A short incision is made in underside of the knee, where a pocket is then created above the calf muscle for the silicone calf implant. In reconstructive cases, insertion of the implant may require tissue expansion techniques.
When your calf implant surgery is over, you should expect about 2 to 3 weeks of downtime. This may require bed rest and elevation of the legs for about 12 hours. Dr. Gill may apply a loose wrapping or gauze over the incision site, which will remain for about one week. Compression garments are worn after that period, which may need to be used for 4 or 5 weeks. During recovery, the pain or discomfort you feel is managed with prescription medication. Possible complications of calf augmentation surgery include hematoma, seroma, edema, changes in sensation, scarring, visible implant and tightening of scar tissue. Ask Dr. Gill for more details if you are concerned about risks of calf implant surgery.
