Breast Implant Removal

Though most women who undergo breast augmentation in their lifetime choose to have their breast implants replaced as time goes on, plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Gill in Houston performs breast implant removal for women who no longer desire to have the implants, whether for health, cosmetic or personal reasons.

If You're Considering Breast Implant Removal

As noted, most women who have undergone breast augmentation in their lifetime choose to have them replaced later in life—an estimated 85% of implants that are removed are then replaced. However, for personal or health reasons, you may choose to have breast implants removed. Oftentimes, a woman who decides to undergo breast implant removal will do so because her lifestyle has changed, but sometimes the decision is made for health reasons.

Breast implants are not guaranteed to last a lifetime and in some cases they may rupture or a woman may experience capsular contracture, a delayed complication in which scar tissue forms around the implant and is visible above the skin. Additionally, if you suffer from breast cancer, even unrelated to the implant, implant removal is a necessary part of treatment.

What to Expect in Surgery

When you undergo breast implant removal surgery with Dr. Gill, you will be placed under a general anesthetic in most cases. This outpatient procedure usually takes an hour or less. Dr. Gill will first make an incision either around the nipple areola or in the breast crease (usually in the same location as your first breast augmentation). Through this incision, he will remove the implant. As saline implants are inflated with the solution once they have been placed, he may deflate the implant before proceeding. Once the doctor has removed your implant, Dr. Gill will close the incisions with sutures and apply a dressing and tape.

Recovering from Breast Implant Removal

Following your breast implant removal surgery, you should expect a few days of downtime and up to three weeks before completely resuming your normal activities. Initially, you may experience swelling, bruising and discomfort, but Dr. Gill may prescribe medication to help you manage pain. The swelling may also cause changes in nipple and breast sensation.
