If You’re Considering a Mommy Makeover in Houston
The best candidates for the mommy makeover are mothers who have problems like sagging tummy skin, excess fat and loss of breast volume after childbirth. These conditions are very common, but fortunately you don’t have to live with them forever.
Mommy makeovers are always customized for an individual woman, but they often include procedures like:
Dr. Gill can help you determine the best surgical procedures for your mommy makeover. During your consultation, he can also determine if and when you’ll be ready for these procedures.
Mommy Makeover Procedures
The following procedures are commonly offered as part of Dr. Gill’s mommy makeover in Houston.
Breast augmentation or breast lift are often beneficial surgeries for mothers who have seen their breast volume or youthful breast position diminish. Breast augmentation involves the surgical placement of a saline or silicone filled breast implant in a breast pocket, which is created either above or below the chest muscle. The implant is centered below the nipple and the incisions are covered with sutures and adhesive or tape. During a breast lift, loose skin and glandular tissue is removed to tighten and elevate the breasts.
Tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer. A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many mothers strive for but struggle to regain after childbirth.
Lipocontouring is best for women who are bothered by persistent (difficult to remove) fat deposits that will not go away, despite their efforts with physical fitness and a healthy diet. The best candidates are relatively young (with great skin elasticity) and have a stable body weight. Obese patients are not typically considered suitable candidates for liposuction.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
A Mommy Makeover is a very common procedure performed in the Woodlands and North Houston, Texas area at my practice. It involves correction of the loose abdominal musculature and skin in combination with breast rejuvenation. Breast rejuvenation can include augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, or any combination of this.
How long does a Mommy Makeover usually take to perform?
A Mommy Makeover takes anywhere from 2 to 5 hours to perform. We typically recommend an overnight stay in a hospital with one of our experienced nursing staff to ensure optimal patient safety and comfort. We find that the overnight stay is instrumental in teaching patients and family members how to effectively care for incisions, drains, how to ambulate, and how to get out of bed or the chair safely and effectively for the most efficient recovery.
How is a Mommy Makeover performed?
I find that the Mommy Makeover is an extremely rewarding procedure for women that have undergone pregnancy, the effects of aging, or weight loss. I typically spend quite a bit of time in the pre-operative process evaluating the patient’s goals and concerns and design a tailored process to reach and surpass those goals. It is important to be realistic in what surgery can and cannot accomplish. When evaluating a breast for asymmetry, sagging (ptosis), hypomastia, or loss of volume of the breast, we will incorporate these issues and develop a plan to rejuvenate the breast. This can involve a breast lift, reduction, augmentation, or a combination thereof. In regards to the abdomen, we will evaluate the amount of loose skin in excess along with the amount of muscle laxity and fat distribution areas. Based on this we will design an abdominoplasty procedure combined with liposuction to identify and treat the areas of concern.
Who is a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover?
Traditionally we find excellent Mommy Makeover candidates are those who have completed rearing of children and desire repair and enhancement of their breast and abdomen due to the effects of pregnancy. In addition, with the increased demand and occurrence of weight loss procedures and medical weight loss, we are seeing Mommy Makeover procedures designed to treat the effects of weight loss, such as breast ptosis or sagging, and abdominal laxity.
What are realistic expectations for a person having a Mommy Makeover?
It is important to set realistic expectations in the beginning and to explain and evaluate each patient with regards to their goals and their concerns. We compare this to what their body habit is and will safely and effectively allow. If expectations are not realistic in regards to a surgical outcome it is important to discuss this prior to surgery and assess the patients concerns and goals. Cosmetic surgery is elective surgery and therefore not medically necessary. Surgery should only be considered if and when realistic goals and expectations can be met.
What are common reasons why a patient wants a Mommy Makeover?
We typically see patients who want a Mommy Makeover because they are affected by the changes the breast and abdomen have incurred due to pregnancy, aging, or weight loss.
How long does it take a patient to recover from a Mommy Makeover?
We typically see that a Mommy Makeover recovery is traditionally not much longer than a standard tummy tuck, therefore, I recommend patients stay overnight in a hospital for 1 night. Upon discharge they will receive careful follow up from me to monitor the incision and drain care at approximately 1 week and my goal is to have the drains out by 2 weeks. Most patients are off their pain medication and able to return to basic activities, such as a desk job and driving, by 2 weeks. We therefore, maintain them in an abdominal binder and soft dressings for a period of up to 6 weeks to allow for optimal healing. By 6 weeks, patients are allowed to come out of their garments and to return to normal activity without restriction. Therefore, basic return to activity by 2 weeks, unrestricted activity by 6 weeks.
Additional comments: in the Woodlands and North Houston, Texas area the Mommy Makeover is the most common procedure performed and it draws a high level of patient satisfaction based on the overall rejuvenation obtained to both the breast and abdomen with cutting edge techniques. With careful pre-op and post-operative care we are able to deliver superb results during these procedures.
