Body Contouring The Woodlands
You may feel healthier and more mobile after significant weight loss, but your body shape may still need a finishing touch to finalize your transformation. Plastic surgeons perform body contouring with liposuction and surgical removal of excess skin. These techniques can be applied to almost any area of the body, including the arms, thighs, midsection, neck and buttocks.
Here in Houston, plastic surgeon Paul Gill M.D. performs body contouring for his patients who seek an improvement in body shape after massive weight loss.
If You’re Considering Body Contouring Surgery
Body contouring in Houston is ideal for patients who have reduced their body weight significantly. Many patients have recently undergone bariatric surgery (lap band or gastric bypass), while others have lost weight through diet and exercise. In either situation, the only way to remove excess skin is through a surgical procedure.
Candidates for body contouring in Houston are:
- Bothered by excess skin in multiple areas
- Close to ideal body weight (not obese)
- Motivated to improve body appearance
Body contouring surgery can be a demanding experience, so it is not recommended for unhealthy patients or those who are not highly-motivated to make a healthy lifestyle change.
What to Expect in Surgery
Every patient’s body contouring experience will vary to a certain degree. Based on your individual needs, Dr. Gill can help you determine which surgical procedures can achieve your goals. Common procedures used in body contouring include the following:
Contouring of the limbs with brachioplasty or thighplasty, can slim down the arms or thighs to remove excess skin and fat that has accumulated. These areas are often problematic for weight loss patients – often impossible to improve without plastic surgery. Surgery involves an incision on the inner portion of the limb, where skin is trimmed and fat is removed with liposuction.
Trunk contouring, or contouring of the midsection, might involve procedures like the tummy tuck or panniculectomy. Dr. Gill also performs the Ultratuck, a procedure that is effective for complete contouring of the tummy and trunk. Loose skin and fat (a limited amount) can be removed from the abdomen with these procedures.
Contouring of the buttocks can be performed with a buttock lift, or gluteoplasty. Sagging skin on the buttocks can be corrected with an incision across the lower back, where hanging skin is lifted, trimmed and then sutured. Liposuction can be performed in adjacent areas for complete gluteal contouring.
Liposuction is frequently included in body contouring. Even in cases of major weight loss, persistent areas of fat will remain. Dr. Gill uses a thin tube called a cannula to dislodge these areas of fat and vacuum them away with suction. A liposuction procedure is suitable for localized fat removal, and may be performed in areas like the back, buttocks, thighs, neck, flanks or tummy.
Your Recovery from Body Contouring
For details on recovery with each procedure, please refer to specific procedure pages. A comprehensive body contouring operation can require 3 to 4 weeks of recovery time, but this varies as some patients undergo procedures in a staged fashion. Dr. Gill will provide specific aftercare instructions that include steps on when to walk around, wearing compression garments to promote skin contraction, and how to care for surgical drains that are frequently used.
